Since 1996, the Northern Haven Support Society has been a vital resource for the Slave Lake community, leading efforts to combat family violence and domestic abuse. Funded by the Government of Alberta's Prevention of Family Violence and Abuse department, NHSS operates a 10-bed Women's Emergency Shelter, offering trauma-informed support to over 1,180 women and children in the past 15 years. The society provides crisis intervention, life skills training, and parenting education, while its Community Services and Outreach Programs extend support to individuals in abusive situations and promote public awareness through education and skill-building initiatives.
